Thanks Dean. After this initial blog, I wrote a full on investigative piece for Gremolata Magazine. http://www.gremolata.com/Articles/213-Spilling-The-Beans-The-Trouble-with-Soy.aspx
You are correct about the difference between here and Asia- traditionally fermented soy like miso and natto and Asian tofu is a completely different food from the sludge we consume as 'natural' here. Soy protein isolate, soy oil (read hydrogenated oil), soy lecithin, and soy milk are veritable waste products sold as health foods.

While Dr. John was fair in his article to say we shouldn't consume outrageous amounts of the stuff, I have to point out that the sources refuting the evidence against soy are all based on vegetarian agendas. John Robbins, whose compassion toward animals in factory farms I admire, freely makes irresponsible statements about nutrition, most of which went out the window decades ago. By now we all know that cholesterol has 'made a comeback' as a vital nutrient as has Vitamin D and even saturated fat is returning. They've only been gone for a hundred years or less as soy industrial oils have tried to convince the world that artificial margarine was safer than animal fats. Dr. McDougall is an advisory member of a responsible sounding Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine- but they are anything but responsible. Their ties to terrorist animal liberation groups are easy to unearth and make me uneasy that they would say anything about nutrition whether founded or not. Compassion groups are one thing, but extremist organizations that bomb medical research labs who use animals or who believe seeing eye dogs are slaves are another. I admit it's very difficult to extricate one agenda from another- the dairy board from Big Soy from PETA from McDonalds etc. So the only place that's reliable to seek nutritional information would be history- the traditional foods around the world that have been eaten since the dawn of our kind. Those foods include meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, tubers. Starches and grains and legumes came a bit later, and all of them require soaking or fermenting to remove nature's toxins. Dairy came around here, too. As for hot dogs- whether meat byproducts or soy sludge- are new kids on the block. It is this unfood that is killing us.

Thanks again for writing.

I understand the desire to put the truth out about products. At the same time I live in China and there are a lot of soy products being sold. For all the bad things about soy there would hardly be any Chinese alive if all this were true. Most legumes need to be cooked before eating anyways. That's not a bad thing and that takes care of the toxin problems. What plant does not want to protect itself against pests when it is growing? That's a great natural defense. That doesn't mean that after cooking or fermenting it's going to have the same negative affects. There are many counter arguments to all the bad things listed. http://www.all-creatures.org/health/soyfood.html
Yes, probably the hype about soy needs to be toned down a bit and people need to balance their soy intake with other whole foods.

Thanks for posting this. I found it on Google, researching the toxicity of soy. Like canola and rapeseed plants, insects wont eat soy. I think that is very telling. I have been planning on covering this topic on my radio show for a while now, so thanks for providing me with extra information. Just in case you're interested, the show is at:

I have great interest in alternative medicine, and I think that the old label of soy as a health food really has to go. In fact, there are a lot of things that are currently recommended that really should go. = )

I'm concerned. I didn't know how harmful soy is. I love to do sports; thus, I need to eat a lot of protein. For this reason I've been eating soy everyday, but now that I know how toxic soy is I need to find something to replace soy and that has protein; a lot of protein. I eat fish, but because of the pollution I only eat two times per week. I also like eggs, but I can't eat eggs the rest of the weak; too much cholesterol. Plus, they get denatured when they are fully cooked and it's toxic to eat them raw. I thought about beans, but beans aren't really my type of food. In addition, most of them are acidic. I've been thinking about eating meat, but meat also has lots of toxins when cooked. I just don't know what to eat anymore. There is a problem with every food found in the market. Nothing seems to be healthy anymore.
Can someboby help me?

The Weston A. Price foundation is one of the leading anti-soy groups. They have a large collection of articles including references to numerous studies:

http://westonaprice.org/soy/index.html

With regard to GRAS status, soy protein must be subject to premarket approval procedures each time manufacturers intend to use it as a food or add it to a food. FDA officials have called for a safety specifications and monitoring procedure for soy protein isolate, but they have never done it! Thus, he key ingredient of soy infant formula is not recognized as safe!

Soy is new the new asbestos. I'm frankly amazed that food processors are pushing it so hard when it's just going to come back on them. The potential legal liability is huge.

Also, the media has been perpetuating misconceptions about the Japanese diet for years now. While it's certainly true that the Japanese eat lots of fish (it is their primary protein source), they also eat a great deal of beef, pork and chicken. And their beef and pork is very fatty. Nothing like what is available in the US. They eat a high percentage of fat from animals in the form of meat, butter and lard. The Okinawans in particular fry everything in lard.

Here is a link with more details.

I really enjoyed this post since I too, agree, that soy is a processed, toxic substance that really has no place in the world of nutrition. One thing I think vegetarians and vegans don't realize about eating meat, although the majority of available choices for carnivores is unfortunately of the industrial variety, is that humanely raised, healthy meat choices do exist. There are farmers who do actually care about their animals and their living conditions while they are alive, and employ natural, organic methods in the raising of their stock which do not involve the use of antibiotics/hormones/steroids/other chemicals and allow the animals to exist in pastured-areas where they are free to roam around and be happy. I've never really bought into the cruelty to animals argument since a consumer *does* have the choice to purchase meats from safe, reliable sources where farmers use ethical and humane practices for raising animals. The only way to stop inhumane treatment of animals on farms, in fact, is to boycott their products and contact your local legislators and express to them your concerns. Oh, and keeping fabulous, intelligent blogs like this is a good idea too. Keep up the good work, glad to see you are here!

No one is forcing us to eat processed food in cans and boxes and fast food places. It's EASY to avoid soy. Just buy fresh unpackaged vegetables and make your own soup. Snack on fruit. Grill fish or scramble eggs and enjoy them with a super salad. There is no ingredient that is hard to avoid if you are willing to eat unprocessed food. The more we stop buying canned, processed, chemical-laden food, the more companies will have to change their tune.

Thanks so much for your comments!

Any thoughts about how to NOT eat soy - when it is in virtually EVERY food product in our stores and has infiltrated every thing we eat with little notice or warning...what about people who have soy allergies? What about "organic" meaning 80% soy fed (for chicken)....what about consumer education? Who is getting rich from soy, pray tell? Or is it a patient way to destroy America within one generation?

How crazy is it to have our pediatricians are so misinformed that they quickly put our babies on soy - when in some countries soy formula is actually outlawed? And stranger still - usually the reason is suspected allergies or colic -- yet...soy is KNOWN to cause digestion problems. Often times these babies are premies with a underdeveloped systems. Imagine the effect of this on their little systems. AND Take a look at where these babies are now? Twenty years later? What problems they have - PCOS, reduced immunities, weight control problems, to name a few.

SOMEbody needs to do SOMETHING!
